Hot gooey oatmeal.

My favorite was Strawberries and Cream.

For half of my life... this was oatmeal. I didn't dream of oatmeal beyond Quaker.

Today... Quaker is practically an insult to oatmeal.

And I'm going to prove it to you with my savory bacon, egg and cheese oatmeal recipe.

Yes, savory oats!

Oatmeal is the breakfast equivalent of pasta... rice... quinoa.... oats are a vehicle for whatever flavors you want.

If you've never had savory oats before, you're missing out... but no longer!

Step aside bacon egg and cheese bagels. There's a new bacon... egg... and cheese combo in town.

Ingredients:

  • Bullet point

    1/2 Cup Oats

  • Bullet point

    1 Cup Water

  • Bullet point

    1 Egg white

  • Bullet point

    1/4 Cup Brussels

  • Bullet point

    1/4 Cup Mushrooms

  • Bullet point

    1/4 Cup Bell Peppers

  • Bullet point

    2 Slices Cooked Bacon, Chopped

  • Bullet point

    Poached Egg (or fried)

  • Bullet point

    1 Oz Cheese

  • Bullet point

    1 Tsp Olive Oil

Directions:

Step 1

Use a small skillet because you won't need to sauté a lot. Of course if you're making a larger family style back... use a bigger skillet.

Heat up some olive oil on medium heat.

Step 2

Add in your bacon first. Bacon always takes a little longer to start cooking.

After a few minutes... chop up your veggies and add these in to start sauteing them.

Make sure you have some room to begin cooking your egg.

Step 3

While preparing your egg... decide how you want to prepare it.

In the images for this recipe, I poached my egg in water with 1 to 2 table spoons of vinegar.

But I've also fried my egg sunny side up before.

Dan love's to scramble his eggs and mix them into the oatmeal.

But make sure you get your egg. You want your egg... bacon... and veggies to finish at nearly the same time.

Step 4

Place your oatmeal in a microwave safe bowl. Stir in one egg white with the correct amount of water.

Microwave for 60 to 70 seconds... stir... and let the oatmeal sit for 1 to 2 minutes to firm up.

If you prefer... you can cook your oatmeal in pot on the stove top. This is Dan's favorite way to prepare his oatmeal.

Step 5

When everything is ready the way you like it... put it all in the same bowl

Mix everything together so it's one big mash of the all the ingredients.

Sprinkle some cheese on the top or mix in some cheese and you're done!

Since I've mentioned Dan and couple times... he prefers to just use cracked pepper on his savory oatmeal.

Savory Bacon Egg & Cheese Oatmeal Recipes Notes:

Use The Veggies You Love

Use the veggies you love. Typically Dan and I use:

  • Bullet point

    Brussel sprouts

  • Bullet point

    Mushrooms

  • Bullet point

    Broccoli (at times)

  • Bullet point

    Tomatoes

  • Bullet point

    Zucchini

  • Bullet point

    Olives

But make sure you add in the veggies. This is a very easy way to start your day if you're a breakfast eater. Plus the veggies is how you'll get those micronutrients.

Are You a Macro Tracker

If you're tracking your macros and you need to decrease your fat... replace the normal bacon with turkey bacon.

Chicken sausage is another great way to reduce fat and possibly increase calories to a better level.

What Condiments Should You Use?

I always put some type of sauce on my food. For this recipe you can easily add:

  • Bullet point

    A spoonful of salsa

  • Bullet point

Hot sauce is always a great choice

  • Bullet point

A drizzle of ketchup (sounds strange but I love it)
