Are Kettlebells a Full Body Workout?

Yes.

But it doesn't have to be.

Kettlebells are a piece of strength based equipment like dumbbells, barbells, among a lot of other cool pieces of equipment.

But kettlebells are unique in a few ways and this allows them to become a total body workout unlike any other piece of strength equipment.

Here are examples of total body kettlebell exercises:

Turkish Get Ups

Kindal is ab the bottom of the turkish getup.
Kindal pressed into her heel and elbow to get up to her hand during the turkish get up.
Kindal lifting her hips into the sky and creating room so she can get her straight leg back.
Kindal getting her leg back and in position so she can come up and stand up.
Kindal lifting her torso and notice her toes are tucked so she is ready to stand up.
Kindal fully standing and now ready to get all the way back down to the ground.

If I had to pick one exercise of all possible exercises that was the most total body... get ups would probably be it.

Here's a short sequence of getting up from the ground to standing.

And think about it... you have to get all the way back down to the ground.

Kettlebell Swings

Kettlebell swings are a total body strength and cardio workout... one of the best.

Swings are primarily a butt and hamstring exercise but you need your entire body to control the movement.

Snatches

Snatches are more cardio than strength... but if you go heavier you will get a serious strength workout with cardio.

Kettlebell snatches are one of the better total body exercises.

Windmills

Kindal down in the bottom of a kettlebell windmill. Notice her core is responsible for keeping balance and strength through this exercise.

Windmills are a unique kettlebell total body exercise.

You need your shoulders and some serious core strength. When you go heavy... things get really interesting.

Off Center Of Gravity

Kindal holding up a kettlebell and you can see how the bulk of the weight is off to the side. This creates the offset center of gravity that make kettlebells so effective for full body workouts.

When you hold a kettlebell... the bell hangs off to the side of your arm. This is known as an off center of gravity.

This causes your body to recruit more muscle to support the weight and every movement/exercise you do with kettlebells.

Kettlebells and barbells can't provide this extra off center of gravity benefit like kettlebells.

Kettlebell Are Great For Total Body Exercises

I highly encourage you to learn how to workout with kettlebells for some of the most effective total body workouts.

Remember, you can still use kettlebells for isolation moves which only get better because of the offset nature of kettlebell training.
